QFT (2 of 9): Mansa Musa’s 3,500-mile epic journey (pilgrimage) to Mecca in the 14th century may have been a ‘death’ knell for the peoples of West Africa. Why or why not? Could it have been his ostentatious display of wealth, power, and prestige drew the attention of Mediterranean merchants to Mali’s economic importance? Hmm, that is a possibility . . . Maybe. TWPS (2 of 9): In ancient times, salt considered a priceless commodity in Rome, as well as places like southern Ghana etc. In fact, in some parts of Africa were salt was scarce, it was prized more highly than gold. Really? In parts of Central Africa today, salt is more valuable than gold. Why? West Africans use salt to preserve (prior to refrigeration) meat, to flavor food, and to replenish their bodies after heavy perspiration lost due to the hot African climate!
